Gold Winner Ya Kun Kaya Toast

Established Franchisor Award

Founded in 1944 by Mr Loi Ah Koon, an immigrant from China’s Hainan Island, the first Ya Kun Kaya Toast coffee stall was located in the old commercial district of Singapore. The stall’s simple fare of charcoal-grilled Kaya toast, soft-boiled eggs and traditionally-brewed coffee and tea were perennial favourites with regular customers who were fellow immigrants. Its nutrients-rich composite was meant to sustain the port labourers for the entire day until dinner.

With the inception of its new business model, Ya Kun in 2001 became the first traditional coffee shop operator in Singapore to migrate its operation to trendy shopping malls. The marriage of heritage and modernisation was revolutionary at that time but was warmly received by local customers as the traditional breakfast was then readily accessible all over Singapore. In 2001, Ya Kun successfully launched its first franchise programme and has since become one of the most popularly known home-grown heritage franchise brand.

Today, thousands of customers gather at Ya Kun daily to savour a good traditional brew or a toast on grill, and enjoy a slice of this uniquely Singapore experience. Ya Kun has since expanded its overseas franchise network into Cambodia, China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Macau, Myanmar, Philippines, South Korea, Taiwan, Thailand and Vietnam.
